The Tale of the Smoking Mirror and the Stolen Sun
In the dawn of time, Tezcatlipoca ruled as the Sun of Earth. He was magnificent but arrogant. His brother, Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, grew tired of Tezcatlipoca’s harsh rule and struck him down with a giant stone club, causing him to fall into the sea.
Fueled by vengeance, Tezcatlipoca transformed into a giant, spotted jaguar and climbed out of the water. He roared, shaking the earth, and leapt into the sky, devouring the sun and plunging the world into darkness. This destroyed the first creation.
Later, the brothers cooperated to create a new world. They transformed into giant serpents to attack the earth monster Tlaltecuhtli, dividing her body to create the heavens and the earth. Despite this collaboration, Tezcatlipoca remained the unpredictable trickster, often testing humanity by appearing as a shadowy figure, forcing rulers like Moctezuma to face their downfall. He commanded the night, obsidian mirrors, and the fate of humanity, forever acting as the dark mirror to Quetzalcoatl's light.
